Multicultural Centre and Pond Life Field Trip

June 24, 2010

In May, 3L got to spend a morning in Stony Plain learning about Pond Life. We did a neat activity to see how plant life helps to prevent erosion. We also learned about surface tension, we got to see how different insects can “walk on water” and did an experiment floating paper clips in a cup (we bet you can’t do it at home!). We also got to explore pond water for different insects and plants.
Later, we spent the afternoon at the Multicultural Centre, also in Stony Plain (right next door!) where we learned about customs and traditions in Peru, India, Ukraine and Tunisia. We got to sample food from each of the countries, play games, dress up in costumes and dance. At the end we even got to paint our faces!
3L extends a big thank you to all of our parent volunteers, thanks so much for your help!

Pringles Project – Final Words

May 12, 2010

Congratulations to all the fabulous teams in Connecticut who worked hard to package their Pringles carefully!  The students of 3L were so excited to work with you on this project, we had a great time and we learned a lot about how to build protective shipping containers.  It was also really neat to compare ourselves with grade 3 students in another country!

The results of our Pringle Project can be found in posts below, the packages that we opened from Connecticut are featured here.  If you are wondering about the results of our packages that we sent to Connecticut then check out Mr. Salsich’s Class Blog to see photos and read all the details.  We are so happy to read all the comments from the students in Connecticut, hopefully you will receive comments from our students soon!

Pringle Project – Indestructable Dragons

May 11, 2010

Our final package was from the “Indestructable Dragons” team in Connecticut.  This box was crunched in the mail!  The top of this package was lined with crumpled up newspaper – we thought that it was neat to see a “real American newspaper”!  Underneath that we found a snack container with cotton balls underneath that and sponges on either side of it.  Inside that snack container we found cotton balls and the chip!

The chip: Wowzers – another perfect result.  Great work Indestructable Dragons!

Pringle Project – Team Extreme

May 11, 2010

Our next box came from “Team Extreme” in Connecticut.  This team had used paper towels but they were different than other teams, they were brown.  They also used a layer of sponges.  Underneath this we found a small snack container filled with cotton balls and the chip.  Finally, the bottom of the box was lined with cotton balls.

The chip: ta-da…the chip was in perfect condition!  Amazing stuff Team Extreme!

Pringle Project – The Big Three

May 11, 2010

Our next box came to us from “The Big Three” team.  We think that this team had a super idea!  The glued bubble wrap on to the inside flaps at the top of the box for a little extra protection - great thinking.  Below the bubble wrapped lid we found the chip nestled between layers of paper towel, cotton balls and sponges.  The very bottom of the box was filled with a squishy layer of cotton balls.

The chip: after close inspection we found a very small chip out of the edge of this chip, however, we were not able to find the small piece that must have broken off.  Other than this, though, the chip looked perfect.  Awesome job Big Three!

Pringle Project – The Yankees

May 11, 2010

The next package we opened was from the “Yankees” team in Connecticut.  This team had a neat idea – they lined the inside walls of their box with paper towels, bubble wrap and sponges.  They used cotton balls and paper towels at the top and bottom of the box.  Finally, the chip was protected in the middle in a small snack container – a box within a box!

The chip: within the snack container the chip was resting in a comfortable bed of cotton balls, it was in perfect condition!  Great work Yankees!

Pringle Project – The Milk Shakes

May 8, 2010

Our next package came to us from “The Milk Shakes” group.  This box was a bit roughed up on the edges, maybe it was tossed around in the mail!  When we opened it we found the top layer of packing was crumpled up newspaper.  Other materials used by this group included cotton balls, paper towels and two sponges.  We were most interested to note that this group folded paper towels and used them to line the inside of the box, what a fantastic idea!

The chip: the chip came out in perfect condition, no cracks or breaks!  Amazing stuff Milk Shakes!

Pringle Project – The Little Giants

May 8, 2010

The second parcel 3L opened was from “The Little Giants” group.  As soon as we opened this package we noticed that it was different from the first.  Our first look in to the box showed that the group had used a sponge layered over paper towels and bubble wrap.  This team used these materials as well as a thick layer of cotton balls at the bottom of their box to protect their “tasty traveler.”

The chip: When we removed the chip from the box it looked perfect, we then noticed a small chip on one end and found the extra piece of chip in the box.  It looks like there was some stress put on one side of the chip.  Other than this the chip was perfect, no big cracks.  Great work Little Giants!

Pringles Project – The Fire Dragons

May 5, 2010

We have opened our first box!  The first Pringle Package was opened this week by Ms. Letendre and Mrs. Blomme.  The box received from “The Fire Dragons” group appeared to be in good condition, it didn’t look like it had been at all squashed or bent.  When we opened it up we found a perfectly shaped square sheet of bubble wrap on top of a thick layer of cotton balls.  After digging through the cotton balls we found the Pringle which was wedged between the layer of cotton and a soft sheet of paper towel.  Below the paper towel was another layer of cotton, paper towel and bubble wrap.

We know what you are thinking though…HOW IS THE CHIP?

It is PERFECT!  The chip is in excellent condition, no cracks or breaks.  Way to go Fire Dragons!
